Start With the Whole Setting
Storm damage can be difficult to judge from a window or garden path. Keep people away from hanging branches and visibly unstable trees, and describe the situation from a safe location. You do not need to stand beneath damaged limbs to explain your concern.
Record when the damage happened and which areas of the property are affected. Mention blocked access and nearby structures when making contact. Separate what you have observed from what you are unsure about, so the initial conversation can focus on the conditions that need assessment.
What to Observe
- Changes in leaves, buds, bark, roots, or branch structure.
- New leaning, cracking, hanging limbs, or movement around the root area.
- Construction, soil compaction, drainage changes, or recent storm exposure.
- Clearance needs around the home, driveway, paths, and utility areas.
Plan the Next Step
